Advertising automation is the use of software to run ad tasks without doing each one by hand. Tasks include launching ads, adjusting budgets and bids, pausing poor performers and reporting. It ranges from simple if-then rules to AI that optimizes delivery in real time.
Rules, platform AI and AI agents
Automation comes in three kinds. They differ in who makes the decision.
| Type | Who decides | Example in Meta |
|---|---|---|
| Rule-based automation | You, by setting a condition and an action in advance | Automated rules in Ads Manager |
| Platform AI | The ad platform's own models, within your budget and goal | Advantage+ campaigns, audiences and placements |
| AI agents | An AI model, within the permissions and rules you set | Meta's ads MCP server, which supports rules that block agent actions |
The third kind is newer. Our entry on agentic marketing covers it.

How automated rules work
Automated rules in Meta Ads Manager check your campaigns, ad sets and ads, then update them or notify you. You choose the criteria that trigger the rule, the action it takes and which active objects it covers. Rules apply at the ad account level, so they work whoever on your team creates the ads.
Meta also sets limits on rules:
- Up to 250 rules per ad account, counting active and inactive ones.
- One of each condition per rule.
- One rule covers objects at a single level, such as campaigns or ad sets, not both.
- No rules on ads about social issues, elections or politics.
Meta adds that rules save time, but you should still monitor overall performance against your goals.
Advantage+ as built-in automation
Meta describes Advantage+ as a suite of products that uses AI to optimize campaigns in real time. It matches ads to the people most likely to act. Rules follow your instructions. Advantage+ makes its own delivery choices inside your budget and goal.
The two work best together: Advantage+ handles delivery, and rules act as guardrails around it. Keep rule actions gentle. Meta says ad sets exit the learning phase after about 50 results in the week after their last significant edit, so frequent big edits can keep an ad set learning.
How to set it up
- List the checks you repeat every week, such as pausing ads above a target cost.
- Turn each one into a rule with one clear condition and one action. Start with notifications only.
- Judge over several days, not one, so a single bad day doesn't trigger action.
- Use Advantage+ for delivery choices, and keep rules as guardrails.
- Review what each rule did every week, and adjust its thresholds.
Example. A store sets a rule that pauses any ad spending twice its target cost per purchase with no sale in three days. A second rule raises budgets 15% on ad sets with ROAS above 3 over seven days. Both send a notification each time they act.
In Madgicx. Set automation rules and alerts on your own conditions. An AI chat explains what changed in the ad account and suggests fixes. It pauses ads, changes budgets or creates new ads only when you approve, and new campaigns start paused.
