How do automated ads work on Facebook?

Automated Facebook ads let Meta's systems decide who sees each ad, where and at what price, based on your goal. Meta's AI shortlists likely ads for each person, an auction picks the winner, and every result trains the next decision.

TL;DR

  • You set the goal, budget, creative and any limits. Meta automates delivery inside them.
  • For each chance to show an ad, Meta's Andromeda system narrows tens of millions of candidate ads to a few thousand, then ranking models score them.
  • An auction picks the ad with the highest total value, which combines the bid, the estimated action rate and ad quality.
  • A new or edited ad set goes through a learning phase, usually about 50 results in the week after its last significant edit.
  • Advantage+ settings widen what Meta automates: audience, placements, budget split and creative variations.
  • Automated rules and outside tools act on top, by changing your campaigns through Ads Manager or Meta's API.

Who automates what

Part Who runs it What it decides What you control
Retrieval (Andromeda) Meta Which ads are candidates for each person Creative variety and any audience limits
Ranking and auction Meta Which ad wins and the price paid Bid strategy, budget and ad quality
Learning phase Meta How delivery settles for a new or edited ad set How often you edit, and enough results
Advantage+ settings Meta, when you turn them on Audience, placements, budget split, creative variations Which settings you turn on
Automated rules Ads Manager, on rules you write Turning items off or on, budget and bid changes, alerts Conditions, actions and schedule
Outside tools and AI assistants Software connected to Meta's API Analysis and the changes you allow Permissions and approvals

What do you set, and what does Meta decide?

You set the campaign objective, the conversion event, the budget, the creative and any limits on audience or placements. Meta decides, opportunity by opportunity, which person sees which ad, in which placement and at what price. The more you leave open, the more Meta automates. That trade is the core of Facebook ads automation.

How does Meta choose which ad to show?

Two steps happen before any auction: retrieval and ranking.

  • Retrieval: Meta's Andromeda system narrows "tens of millions of ad candidates into a few thousand relevant ad candidates". Meta built it as advertisers made "more than 15 million ads in a month" with its generative AI tools.
  • Ranking: Meta's models then estimate how likely each person is to act on each remaining ad. Meta's January 2026 newsroom post says it doubled the GPUs behind its GEM ranking model in Q4 2025, which brought a 3.5% lift in ad clicks on Facebook.

Retrieval can only choose among the ads you supply. That is why a few distinct creative concepts give automated delivery more to work with than one ad in many colours.

How does the Facebook ad auction work?

Meta runs an ad auction each time there is an opportunity to show someone an ad, and billions take place every day. Ads whose target audience includes that person are eligible. The winner is the ad with the highest total value, subject to a price floor.

Total value combines three factors:

  • Bid: what the advertiser is willing to pay for the desired outcome.
  • Estimated action rates: how likely that person is to engage with or convert from that ad.
  • Ad quality: based on feedback from people viewing or hiding the ad, and on low-quality signals such as engagement bait.

Because estimated action rates and ad quality measure relevance, Meta says a more relevant ad can beat ads with higher bids. Meta also says its auction adjustments won't charge you more than your bid.

What is the learning phase?

After launch or a significant edit, each ad set goes through a learning phase while delivery settles. Meta's learning phase page says ad sets usually exit it "after about 50 results in the week after the ad set's last significant edit". Editing during learning resets it.

To help delivery settle, Meta suggests combining similar ad sets and advises: "Avoid high ad volumes". The Last significant edit and Results columns in Ads Manager show where each ad set stands.

What does Advantage+ automate?

Advantage+ settings let Meta automate more of the setup itself:

  • Audience: Advantage+ audience lets Meta's AI find the audience. It uses signals such as past conversions, Meta Pixel data and interactions with previous ads.
  • Placements and budget: for sales and app campaigns, Meta's developer blog says a campaign counts as Advantage+ with Advantage+ campaign budget, Advantage+ audience in at least one ad set and Advantage+ placements in all ad sets.
  • Creative: Meta describes Advantage+ creative as a feature that "automatically creates variations of your ad using a single image or video and shows a personalised ad to each person".

Our Meta Advantage+ review covers how these settings perform in practice.

How do automated rules work?

Automated rules are automation you define. Meta's automated rules check your campaigns, ad sets or ads, then update them or notify you when your criteria are met. Each rule has three parts: the criteria that trigger it, the action it takes, and the items it affects. Rules apply at the ad account level.

Rules are the form of advertising automation you control most directly. For setup steps and example rules, see how to automate Facebook ads.

How do outside tools automate Facebook ads?

Outside tools work through Meta's API. Meta describes its Marketing API as a way to "automate advertising across Meta technologies", with "functions for ad creation, management, and performance analysis". A tool reads your data, applies its own logic and sends changes back with the permissions you granted.

AI assistants work the same way. Meta Ads AI Connectors are in open beta, with an ads MCP server and a command-line tool for creating, managing and analyzing campaigns from AI tools. Since a July 16, 2026 update, ads MCP server rules govern what AI agents can do.

Either way, the tool changes your settings, and Meta's delivery system still runs the auction.

What makes automated delivery work well?

Automation learns from what you feed it:

  • Accurate conversions: Meta optimizes toward the events it receives. Send them from both the Meta Pixel and the Conversions API, so events blocked in the browser still arrive.
  • Enough results: fewer, larger ad sets exit learning sooner.
  • Distinct creative: retrieval can only choose among the ads you give it.
  • Stable settings: each significant edit restarts learning.

Where Madgicx fits

Madgicx helps you see and steer what Meta's automation is doing. Its AI chat analyzes your Meta ad account, explains what changed and finds wasted spend, and any change it suggests waits for your approval. You can set your own automation rules and alerts. Its conversion tracking sends purchases to Meta from your server, so delivery learns from more complete data.

FAQ

Are Facebook ads automated?

Yes, Facebook ad delivery is automated: Meta's systems choose which ad each person sees, and at what price, through an auction at every ad opportunity. Advertisers still set the goal, budget and creative.

What does automated mean in Facebook ads?

Automated in Facebook ads means a system, not a person, makes a delivery or management decision. Meta automates delivery and Advantage+ settings, while automated rules and outside tools automate actions you define.

How does the Facebook ad auction decide the winner?

The Facebook ad auction picks the ad with the highest total value, which combines the bid, the estimated action rate and ad quality. A more relevant ad can win against ads with higher bids.

How long does Facebook's algorithm take to learn?

Facebook's delivery system usually takes about 50 results in the week after an ad set's last significant edit to leave the learning phase. Until then, results are less stable.

Is Advantage+ the same as automated ads?

No, Advantage+ is one part of Facebook ad automation, not all of it. Automated rules and outside tools are other forms, and they act on top of Advantage+ delivery.

Does ad automation replace a media buyer?

No, ad automation runs delivery and routine actions, but a media buyer still sets strategy, creative direction, budgets and measurement. More in can AI replace a media buyer.
