UTM tracking adds short tags to the end of your ad's link, so your analytics tool can tell which campaign, ad set and ad sent each visitor. The tags travel with the click to your site, and your analytics reads them there, which lets you check Meta's numbers against your own.
TL;DR
- A UTM tag is text added to a URL, such as
utm_source=facebook. - Five parameters exist: source, medium, campaign, content and term.
- Meta can fill them automatically with dynamic values like the campaign name.
- Your analytics tool reads the tags and groups visits by them.
- UTMs measure clicks only. They do not capture views or sales that happened without a click.
- Tag every ad the same way, or your reports will split into pieces.
What does a UTM link look like?
Here is a made-up product link with tags added:
https://example.com/shoes?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=paid_social&utm_campaign=spring_sale&utm_content=video_a
The part after the question mark is the UTM tracking. When someone clicks, the tags stay in the address bar, and your analytics tool saves them with the visit. Later, a report can say "visits from facebook / paid_social, campaign spring_sale".

Try for Free ($0 Trial)What do the five parameters mean?
| Parameter | What it records | Example for a Meta ad |
|---|---|---|
| utm_source | Where the click came from | |
| utm_medium | The kind of traffic | paid_social |
| utm_campaign | The campaign name | spring_sale |
| utm_content | Which ad or variation | video_a |
| utm_term | A keyword, mostly for search | Usually left empty on Meta |
Source, medium and campaign are the core three. Content tells you which ad did the work, and it is the one most Meta advertisers should add.
How do I set UTM tags in Ads Manager?
You do not need to type a long link for every ad.
- Open the ad in Ads Manager and scroll to the tracking section.
- Find the URL parameters field.
- Paste your tags, using Meta's dynamic values where you want names filled in automatically. Meta's dynamic parameters include the campaign name, ad set name and ad name, written in double curly braces.
- Save, and click the ad preview link to test.
An example string: utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=paid_social&utm_campaign={{campaign.name}}&utm_content={{ad.name}}. Use this once at the ad level, and every new ad that copies it inherits the same pattern. If you would rather generate the string than write it, our free Facebook UTM builder does it.
How to check: click the ad's preview, then look at the address bar on your site. The tags should show real names, not the curly-brace text.
What can UTM tracking tell you?
- Which ads send traffic. Compare visits and orders by campaign and content in your analytics.
- Whether Meta's numbers match yours. Orders credited to facebook / paid_social in your analytics can sit beside Meta's purchases. Our answer on why Ads Manager results differ from revenue shows how to read the gap.
- How traffic behaves. Bounce, pages per visit and conversion rate by ad.
What can't it tell you?
UTM tags need a click. A person who saw your ad, did not click, and bought later leaves no tag. They also depend on the site keeping the tag through the visit, and a redirect or a checkout hop can strip it. And they say nothing about the tracking inside Meta: for that you need the pixel and server events. See what ad attribution is.
What is the most common mistake?
Inconsistent naming. If one ad uses Facebook, another facebook and a third fb, your analytics shows three sources. Write your naming rules down, use lowercase, avoid spaces, and let dynamic values do the rest.
Where Madgicx fits
Madgicx pairs with UTM tagging. UTMs give your analytics a click-based view, and Madgicx Cloud Tracking sends conversions to Meta from your server so Meta sees more of them. Using both gives you two sources to compare. You decide the naming and what to act on.
FAQ
Does Facebook add UTM tags automatically?
No, you add them in the URL parameters field of the ad. Meta then appends them to the link.
Are UTM tags the same as the Meta pixel?
No, UTM tags label a visit in your analytics, while the pixel reports actions to Meta. They solve different problems.
Can UTM tags hurt my site?
No, they only add text to the address. Make sure your page ignores the extra text and loads normally.
Do I need UTM tags if I use GA4?
Yes, GA4 relies on them to group paid social traffic correctly. Without them, some visits are filed as other traffic.
Can I use the same tags on every platform?
Use the same pattern, but change the source and medium to match each platform. That keeps channels apart in your reports.
