Meta Ads Manager is Meta's tool for creating, running and measuring ads on Facebook, Instagram and Meta's other placements. You use it by building a campaign, setting an ad set's budget and audience, adding an ad, and then reading the results table to decide what to change.
TL;DR
- Ads Manager is free to use. You pay Meta only for the ads that run.
- Every ad lives in a three-level tree: campaign, ad set, ad.
- The table shows one row per item, with columns you can change.
- Breakdowns split results by day, age, placement and more.
- Automated rules and Advantage+ settings live inside it.
- Learn to read one row before you read the whole account.
What are the parts of Ads Manager?
| Area | What it does | When you use it |
|---|---|---|
| Account overview | Shows spend and results at a glance | Daily check |
| Campaigns, ad sets, ads tabs | Lists each level with its results | Every change |
| Create button | Starts a new campaign | Launching |
| Columns | Chooses which metrics the table shows | Setting up your view |
| Breakdown menu | Splits the results by a chosen field | Looking for patterns |
| Date range | Sets the period you read | Every time |
| Automated rules | Runs if-then actions on a schedule | After you know your numbers |
Meta describes breakdowns as a way to split results by level, time, demographics, geography, delivery or action.

- Open your ad account. Check that you are in the right account and that your payment method is set.
- Click Create. Choose an objective that matches the result you want, such as sales or leads.
- Set the ad set. Choose a budget, a schedule, the audience and the placements. Meta's page on budgets explains daily and lifetime budgets.
- Add the ad. Pick the page or Instagram account, the creative, the text and the destination.
- Publish and wait. Meta reviews the ad, so it may not deliver at once.
- Read results after a few days. Judge by the result you chose, not by clicks alone.
How to check each step: after publishing, the campaign shows a status, and the ad shows either "In review", "Active" or a reason it was declined. Fix a decline from the ad's row.
How do you read one row of results?
Take this made-up row from the ad sets tab:
| Ad set | Spend | Purchases | Cost per purchase | Frequency |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lookalike buyers | $150 | 6 | $25 | 1.8 |
Read it from left to right. $150 was spent. Six purchases came in, which is $25 each. Each person saw the ad 1.8 times on average, so it is not worn out yet. If your break-even cost per purchase is $30, this ad set is profitable. If it is $20, it is not, and you should look at the ads inside it before you change the budget.
Always set the date range first, and check the attribution setting, because both change the numbers.
What mistakes do beginners make?
- Reading results before the ad has had a few days.
- Editing an ad set daily, which can restart learning.
- Choosing a traffic objective when the goal is sales.
- Looking at clicks and ignoring cost per result.
- Mixing too many audiences into one ad set, so you cannot tell what works.
What should you learn next?
Learn the three levels first. Then set up a custom column view with the five numbers you use. Once you check the account weekly and repeat the same changes, move to automated rules.
