Ad creative is everything a person sees or hears in your ad: the image or video, the words that go with it and the button. It is the part of an ad you design, as opposed to the audience, budget and bid that you set.
TL;DR
- Ad creative has four working parts: the visual, the text, the call to action and the first impression of the opening seconds or frame.
- It is separate from targeting, budget and the offer, although it has to carry the offer.
- Two ads with the same audience and budget can perform very differently because of creative alone.
- Small edits to one ad are variations. A new concept changes the idea, not just the look.
- You judge creative by comparing its click and purchase results against your own past ads.
What are the parts of an ad creative?
Think of an ad as a short pitch with a few moving pieces. Each one can be changed on its own, which is why testing works.
| Part | What it is | Example for a skincare brand |
|---|---|---|
| Visual | The image, video or carousel cards | A 15-second video of someone applying the serum |
| Primary text | The words above or below the visual | "Dry skin by 3 p.m.? Here is what changed my routine." |
| Headline | The short line next to the button | "Serum that holds moisture all day" |
| Call to action | The button label | Shop now |
| Hook | The first frame or the first line that decides whether people keep watching | The close-up of cracked, dry skin in the first second |
| Offer | What the viewer gets, stated in the ad | Free shipping on the first order |
Nobody sees these parts one at a time. They land together, in a feed, in about a second, which is why the opening matters so much.

Take a made-up skincare brand selling a $40 serum. It runs two ads to the same audience with the same budget.
- Ad A shows a studio photo of the bottle with the line "Hydration that lasts." The offer is not mentioned.
- Ad B shows a short video of a person with dry skin in the morning and in the afternoon, with the line "Dry skin by 3 p.m.? Try this." The offer is in the headline.
Nothing about the targeting differs between them. If Ad B earns more clicks and purchases, the difference came from the creative: the problem it opened with, the format and the clear offer. That is what people mean when they say creative is a lever of its own.
How is creative different from targeting and the offer?
These three decide results together, but you set them in different places.
- Targeting decides who can see the ad. On Meta, much of this is now handled by its own systems.
- The offer is what you sell and on what terms, such as a price or a bundle.
- Creative is how the offer is shown and said.
A weak offer cannot be rescued by a clever image, and a strong offer can be buried by a dull one. When results drop, check which of the three changed before you redesign anything. Our answer on how to improve Facebook ad creatives starts from the metric that is weak.
Creative or creative asset: what is the difference?
An asset is a single file, such as one photo or one video. A creative is the finished combination that people see: asset, text and button together. One video asset can sit inside many creatives, each with different text. Meta warns that similar creative may not be treated as different, so swapping one word is not a new concept.
When does creative matter most?
Creative matters most when you cannot rely on targeting to do the work. That is now the common case on Meta, where automated delivery decides much of who sees an ad and the picture and the message do most of the persuading. It also matters when you run the ads for a long time, because people tire of the same ad. Our glossary entry on dynamic creative optimization explains one way Meta mixes parts for you, and the answer on tracking ad creative performance shows what to measure.

FAQ
Is ad creative the same as an ad?
No, the creative is the part of the ad that people see and hear. The ad also includes its settings, such as the audience, budget and destination.
Does ad creative include the text?
Yes, the text counts as creative. The primary text, headline and button label shape the message as much as the picture does.
What are examples of ad creative?
Examples include a product photo, a short video, a carousel of colors or a screenshot of a review. Each one comes with text and a button.
Who makes ad creative?
Designers, video editors, creators and increasingly AI tools make it. Someone on the team should always check it for accuracy and brand fit before it runs.
