Meta's AI chooses who sees your ad by predicting, for each person at each moment, how likely they are to take the action you asked for. You steer it with your goal, your conversion data and your creative, more than with audience settings.
TL;DR
- Targeting has moved from picking audiences to feeding the AI signals.
- The signals include your conversion events, your creative and what people do on Meta.
- Advantage+ audience treats your audience choices as suggestions.
- The conversion event you optimize for is the strongest steering input.
- Creative now works as targeting: different ads reach different people.
- Weak or missing conversion data weakens the targeting.
What does the AI look at when it picks a viewer?
Three kinds of input meet in the auction.
- The person. Past activity on Meta's apps, such as ads they engaged with and pages they follow.
- The ad. Its format, message and how people have reacted to it.
- The goal. The result you asked for, and the data you have sent about who delivers it.
Meta describes Advantage+ audience as a way to let its systems find people more likely to respond to your ads, using your audience inputs as suggestions. Meta has also written about its Andromeda retrieval engine, which helps pick candidate ads from a very large pool before the final ranking.

A store sells running socks. It has two ways to set up the same campaign.
| Setup A | Setup B | |
|---|---|---|
| Audience | Women 25 to 40, interest in running | Advantage+ audience, same suggestion |
| Conversion event | Add to cart | Purchase, sent by browser and server |
| Creative | One image | Four concepts: fit, price, a review, a gift angle |
| What the AI learns | Who adds socks to a cart | Who buys, and which message each buyer responded to |
Setup B gives the AI more to work with. The purchase event points to buyers, and the four concepts let different messages find different people. Nothing in B is a hidden setting. It simply gives the AI a clearer job and more variety.
The numbers are illustrative. Your results will depend on the product, price and market.
How is this different from interest targeting?
Interest targeting says: show this to people who like running. The AI approach says: show this to people who act like past buyers, whatever they like. The second can find buyers whose interests you would never guess. The first gives you control and a story you can explain to a client.
You can still use manual audiences where control matters, for example to exclude existing customers or to respect a legal limit. Check what each placement option allows before relying on it.
How can you give the AI better signals?
- Send purchases with value. Add the order value so the AI can tell a $20 order from a $200 one.
- Send events from the server too. If the browser loses events, the AI learns from a partial picture. See what the Conversions API is.
- Use the right event. Optimize for the deepest event with enough volume.
- Vary the creative. Different concepts reach different segments.
- Keep exclusions honest. Exclude current customers if the offer is for new ones.
- Be patient. Frequent edits can reset learning.
When is manual targeting still right?
When the product is for a narrow, known group; when the law restricts who may see the ad; or when the account has too little conversion data for the AI to learn from. In those cases, set the audience yourself and use broader options as a test, not a switch.
Where Madgicx fits
Madgicx helps you feed Meta's AI better and read what it did. Madgicx Cloud Tracking hosts Meta's Conversions API Gateway and sends conversions to Meta from the server, so Meta sees and attributes more of them. Creative Insights shows which creatives win, and Madgicx optimization tools such as AI Marketer prepare budget and creative actions for you to approve.
FAQ
Does Meta still allow detailed targeting?
Yes, detailed targeting options remain in many campaign setups, though Meta has moved toward broader, AI-led options. What you can pick depends on the campaign type.
Does Meta use my pixel data for targeting?
Yes, conversion events from your pixel and server help the AI learn which people take your actions. Accurate events give it better examples.
Can I stop the AI going beyond my audience?
In Advantage+ audience, your inputs are suggestions. If you need a hard limit, use the options Meta lists as controls, such as age or location limits, or choose a manual audience.
Is broad targeting better?
Not always. Broad works when the account has strong conversion data and varied creative. Narrow can win for a small niche.
How long does the AI take to learn who to target?
It depends on how many results the ad set collects. Meta explains the learning phase as the period when delivery is still being tuned.
