What is the Meta ad creative safe zone?

The safe zone is the part of an ad's frame where text, faces and logos stay visible in every placement. In tall placements such as Stories and Reels, Meta draws its own elements over the top and bottom of your media, so anything important has to sit away from those edges.

TL;DR

  • The safe zone matters most for 9:16 ads in Stories and Reels.
  • Meta covers parts of the top and the bottom with the profile name, caption and button.
  • Keep text, logos and the product in the middle of the frame.
  • Use the preview for each placement in Ads Manager as the final check.
  • Margins vary by placement, so work from the preview, not from a memorized number.

What gets covered in a tall placement?

In Stories and Reels, the ad fills the screen. Meta then adds its own layer on top.

Area of the frame What can cover it What to keep there
Top edge The profile name, the progress bar and the close button Nothing important: background only
Middle Usually clear Product, face, headline, offer
Lower area The caption, the button and the reaction bar Nothing important: background only
Left and right edges Rarely covered, but trimmed on some phones Padding for text

The exact depth of the covered bands depends on the placement and the device. For that reason, this page gives no pixel numbers. Check the preview in Ads Manager, which shows the real overlay for the ad you are building.

How do you place things in the safe zone?

  1. Start with the placement. Choose the ratio first. Meta recommends 9:16 for Stories, Status and Reels. How to check: the file is tall, not a square with padding.
  2. Put the main subject in the middle third. The product or face sits away from both bands. How to check: cover the top and bottom of your screen with a hand. The ad should still make sense.
  3. Set the text inside the middle. Keep it short, because Meta suggests tailoring copy by placement, for example shorter copy for Stories. How to check: read the headline while looking at the preview.
  4. Leave the corners free of logos. A logo in a corner is easy to lose under the profile name or button. How to check: the logo, if you keep it, sits inside the middle area.
  5. Preview every placement. Open the preview for Feed, Stories and Reels. How to check: no word touches an edge or a Meta element.

What does a good layout look like?

A made-up shoe brand makes a 9:16 ad for a new sneaker. The sneaker sits in the middle, large, on a plain background. The headline "Light enough to forget" sits just above it, inside the middle area. The top and bottom are plain color, so the profile name and the button have room. The logo appears once, small, near the end of the video, in the middle.

Compare a version where the headline sits in the top band and the price in the bottom band. In Stories, the profile name covers the headline and the button covers the price. The ad looks fine in a design file and broken in the feed. That gap is why the preview matters.

Does the safe zone apply to Feed?

Less so. Feed does not overlay buttons on the media, since the text sits above or below it. Still, an automatic crop can trim the edges, so keep a small margin of padding around text. Our answer on Meta ad creative sizes covers ratios for each placement.

What if one file has to work everywhere?

Design for the strictest placement, which is the tall one, and keep the key content in the middle. A 9:16 file with everything in the center zone will also survive a crop to 4:5. A square design may not survive a stretch to 9:16. If one concept matters, build two layouts. Our answer on improving Facebook ad creatives covers how to match creative to placement more broadly.

FAQ

How big is the Meta safe zone?

It depends on the placement and the device, so Meta's preview is the reliable check. Keep the middle of a 9:16 frame for anything important.

Do I need a safe zone for Reels?

Yes, Reels are tall and Meta adds the caption, buttons and name over the video. Keep text and logos away from the top and the bottom.

Can I put a logo in the corner?

You can, but it may be covered by Meta's own elements in tall placements. Put it in the middle area or in the closing frame.

Does the safe zone change for video?

The idea is the same, but video also has time. Show the key text while it is clear of the overlay, and hold it long enough to read.
